ILOILO City – Four-hundred fifty three martyrs and heroes of Panay were remembered and given tributes by their comrades before All Souls day celebration next week.
“This is our way of commemorating our comrades’ sacrifices and life struggles for the people and their contributions for the advancement of human and democratic rights,” Panay Alliance-KARAPATAN secretary general Reylan Vergara said.
According to Vergara, commemorating the martyrs and heroes of the people give them and the younger generation of activists more power and strength to continue the fight until victory.
The martyrs were either killed through bullets from the fascist government or died naturally.
Additional martyrs and heroes are Iglesia Filipina Independiente (IFI) Supreme Bishop Tomas A. Millamena, fair trade activist Romeo Capalla, organic farmer Dionisio Garete and IFI Bishop Gaspar Bañez.
The tribute started with an ecumenical service at 10 o’clock at the United Church of Christ in the Philippines (UCCP) and concluded with the offering of flowers and candles at the Monuments for Heroes and Martyrs, Plaza Libertad of this city./
